Bringing Warmth Into Your Home This Fall

Autumn is a time of year when friends and family gather to spend time together. Whether you’re the kind of homeowner that turns your home heating system on when it’s below 70 degrees or you’re waiting until the first snowfall to do so, your home’s interior décor could use a little warming up during this time of year. Barbara Tabak, a Mechanicsburg, PA interior decorator, offers some of her best tips for bringing warmth into your home this fall.

  • Add a layered look. The change from summer to fall can be sudden, which means temperatures can drop sooner than we expect them to. If your home features hardwood, tile, or concrete floors, leaving them bare could make your home feel colder. Warm the room with an ornate throw rug or layer decorative rugs with similar patterns and color schemes for an extra cozy look.
  • Update your window coverings. Pack the light, airy window treatments for the fall season. Before you swap out your window treatments, examine the weather-stripping around your windows. If you notice cracks or leaks, recaulk the area to prevent heat from seeping out or the cold from coming in. Then install heavier drapes for the fall and winter. They’ll help keep out drafts and make the room feel more luxurious.
  • Dress up your guest bedroom. With the holidays around the corner, you’re sure to have a multitude of visitors passing through. Make them feel welcome with an updated guest room. Don’t skimp out on the little touches, like decorative plants, magazines, and books to keep them occupied. To make your guests really feel at home, leave a nightlight plugged in. This will make navigating the unknown layout of your home easier!
  • Light a fire. Nothing brings the warmth of the fall season into your home quite like a fire. For those homeowners with fireplaces, stock up on wood and light a fire on extra crisp fall evenings. If your home features a faux fireplace, use it to create ambiance in a room. The light from these flames (real or artificial) will illuminate your home and evoke a sense of welcoming. If you’re tight on space, use a small space heater to serve the same purpose.
  • Swap out fabrics. Pack away the bed shams, throw blankets, and pillows that feature breezy fabrics like cotton, gauze, or linen and replace them with sturdier fabrics like velvet and wool. These options are heavier visually and physically and will help welcome fall into your home.
